CHARLESTON, S.C. – Talia Colchico scored her first goal of the season deep into the second half to give the College of Charleston women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
Charleston started on the front foot with Raymara Barreto, Luciana Garcia Rielfkohl and Kacey Smekrud all having efforts at goal inside ten minutes. But the Cougars didn't have to wait long to break the deadlock. After a foul, a Laura Ortega free-kick from the right channel diverted off the head of a Winthrop defender and into the goal to put Charleston up 1-0.
The Cougars continued to create opportunities but couldn't find the second goal before the half-time whistle blew.
Winthrop came out in the second half and took the game to the Charleston. Genevieve Henderson made three saves in seven seconds to keep them at bay, until the Eagles found the equalizer twenty minutes from time through a header by Natalie Royaards.
As the game entered the final stages, Charleston once again had the better opportunities with Leah Deutsch, Sara Deutsch and Colchico all having efforts at goal.
In the 75th minute the game winner finally came. Colchico picked the ball up 25-yards from goal, beat her marker, and fired a shot into the top right corner for her first goal of the season.
The Eagles failed to test the Cougar defense any further with the final whistle confirming a 2-1 win and a third-straight victory for The College to move to 5-3-0 on the year.
Postgame Quotes - Head Coach Christian Michner
On the game…
"It wasn't an easy game today for the Cougars. Winthrop played hard and really forced us into situations that made us think and made us play a little differently to find success. I'm proud of my team for finding a way to win, and to win in a different fashion than we've done this season. There was a lot of heart and effort on that field today and we need that type of grit to win some games."
On Colchico's game-winner…
"Talia scored a wonderful goal to win it for us as time was winding down. She got the ball in a wide position, beat her player and curled it into the far post. It was a fantastic goal."
