CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston beach volleyball team will start its postseason run on Friday afternoon in search of its first Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Beach Volleyball Championship at the Rally Volleyball Complex in Emerson, Ga. Charleston is seeded eighth out of the 12 conference schools, and will face No. 1 Florida State and No. 12 Southern Mississippi in Group One during pool play on Friday.
The Cougars are coming off perhaps their most complete weekend of the season after posting an unblemished 4-0 record at the Palmetto Invitational in Columbia, S.C. with wins over Missouri State, UNCW, Tulane, and No. 11 South Carolina. Charleston has set a new single-season program record with 18 wins so far this spring, and are receiving the most votes outside of the top 20 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll this week.
Four of the Cougars' five most frequent pairings have won at least 15 flights this season, with seniors
McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) and
Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) setting the bar at two's with a 19-1 record. The duo's only loss this season came against No. 19 Georgia State at GSU's Diggin' Duals on Mar. 30. Charleston's top pairing of senior
Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) and junior
Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) has compiled a 16-4 record this season, while the No. 5 duo of seniors
Katja Ehlers (Raleigh, N.C.) and
Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) carry a 16-2 mark.
The Cougars will open the CCSA Championships with their first-ever meeting against No. 12 seed Southern Miss., which enters postseason play with an 11-18 record in its inaugural season. First serve is slated for 12:00 p.m. Charleston then square off with top-seeded Florida State (23-5) at 3:00 p.m.
