
Tough Field Awaits Cougars at Season-Opening Trojan Classic

Charleston, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team opens the 2020 campaign with five games in three days at the Trojan Classic at the Troy Softball Complex in Troy, Ala.
The Cougars open tournament play with a pair of contests on Friday, taking on Western Kentucky at 1:30 and the host Trojans at 6:30. Charleston faces North Florida (12:30) and Lipscomb (8:00) on Saturday and Lipscomb again on Sunday at 1:30 to round out the weekend.
The four teams the Cougars will face this weekend combined for 146 wins a year ago including a conference title for Lipscomb.
There will be live stats for each game with links available on the Cougar softball schedule. The game against Troy can be watched on Facebook Live.
"We have prepared well but have a tough schedule ahead of us," said Cougar head coach Linda Kalafatis, who needs three wins to reach the 1,000 plateau in her career. "If we play with great energy and stay focused as a team, we will have a strong season."
Here is a look at the Cougars' four opponents this week.
Western Kentucky went 37-13 last year (18-6 in C-USA) and set a school record with a .740 winning percentage. The Hilltoppers return a strong pitching staff led by Kelsey Aikey (14-9, 2.15 ERA, 184 strikeouts) and Kennedy Sullivan (16-4, 3.14 ERA, 165 strikeouts). Kendall Smith was first team all-conference after batting .321 with 12 homers and 46 RBI.
Troy finished second in the Sun Belt with a 19-8 record and was 37-20 overall, giving the Trojans 71 wins over the past two seasons. Leanna Johnson was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year with a 25-9 record, 2.19 ERA, seven shutouts and 231 strikeouts. Katie Webb led the team with a .355 average to go along with eight doubles, three triples and 32 RBI.
North Florida posted a record of 30-24 last year including four wins in the ASUN Tournament to advance to the championship game. The Ospreys took a big hit in graduation, losing their top three hitters who combined for 29 doubles, 16 homers, 91 runs scored and 89 RBI as well as two pitchers who accounted for 24 victories.
Lipscomb captured the ASUN regular season and tournament titles and earned a victory in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional. The Bisons (42-15-1 in 2019) are led by reigning ASUN Player of the Year Hannah DeVault, who led the conference with 20 doubles and 51 RBI while batting .322 with 10 homers. Lipscomb swiped 106 bases with Peyton Ward leading the way with 31.
