CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's soccer team (2-10-3, 1-4-1) hosted James Madison (5-8-1, 3-3) on Thursday night at Patriots Point.
It did not take long at all for fireworks to begin in the match. In the very first minute, junior
Olivia Freitas sent a perfect cross to freshman
Delaney Dawes, who headed it past the keeper for a beauty of a goal. It is the earliest the Cougars have scored in a match this season.
Ā
Unfortunately for CofC, James Madison came out of the gate hot as well. A minute after CofC opened the match with a score, the Dukes immediately responded. Less than three minutes into the match, both teams were already on the scoreboard.
Ā
The Cougars would get a few opportunities throughout the rest of the first half, with
Delaney Dawes firing shots on goal in the 13th and 22nd minutes. A shot on goal by
Natalie Sgro in the 35th minute was the last scoring chance the Cougars would see in the opening period. In that same minute, James Madison scored to take a 2-1 advantage. The Dukes would carry that 2-1 edge into the halftime break.Ā
James Madison extended its lead in the 53rd minute, as the Dukes scored aĀ third straight goal after falling behind 1-0 in the opening minute. The Cougars had opportunities in the 61st and 74th minutes, but were unable to cash them in.Ā
The score remained 3-1 until the 84th minute, when
Grace Powell cut the deficit in half. The sophomore dribbled from midfield to the box and fired a strike to cut James Madison's lead to 3-2 with just over five minutes remaining. Charleston was unable to find an equalizer in the final minutes, as JMU claimed a 3-2 victory.Ā
