CHARLESTON, S.C. - Coming off a tournament win at the Edisto Island Invitational two weeks ago, the College of Charleston women's golf squad returns to action Oct. 25-26 at the 22nd annual Palmetto Intercollegiate. CofC hosts the 54-hole event at Turtle Point at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which features a 16-team field playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday at the Par-72, 6,005-yard course.
CofC looks for a second straight win this season and its third straight Top-2 finish to end the fall season in style. Head coach Jamie Futrell's group has won two consecutive Palmetto Intercollegiate tournaments dating back to 2018. The Cougars enter the 2021 rendition ranked No. 65 nationally in Golfstat's rankings, the highest of any CAA team.
The 16-team field descending on Turtle Point this week includes CofC, Chattanooga, Daytona State, East Carolina, Elon, Georgetown, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, North Florida, Sam Houston State, South Florida, Stetson, Troy, UNCG, Xavier and Youngstown State. Only No. 42 Sam Houston State and No. 56 Chattoonga enter the tournament ranked higher than CofC.
Futrell is rolling with the same five in the lineup - Emma Schimpf, Viktoria Hund, Emily Dunlap, Mary Kathryn Talledo and Jodee Tindal - who helped capture the Edisto Island Invite on Oct. 12. The win marked the 32nd in Futrell's storied career, the 11th most among all active NCAA coaches. Schimpf and Hund tied for medalist honors and both earned CAA Co-Golfer of the Week honors after firing identical 5-under 208s, tying for the third-lowest 54-hole score in program history. All five Cougars in the lineup head to Kiawah with a ton of momentum after they each finished in the Top-17 in Edisto.
"We look forward to hosting at Kiawah this weekend," Futrell said. "We have played well here in the past and have played well the last couple of tournaments. Hopefully, those two things stay lined up this week. The team is in good form heading into the tournament."
All nine Cougars on the 2021-22 roster will compete again this week at Kiawah, with Kirsty Brodie, Othilie Lied, Isabella Britt and Smith Knaffle all set to play in the field as individuals. Lied is coming off her best finish of the campaign at Edisto, placing T-11 overall.
