Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Goal by Delaney Dawes Gives Cougars 3-2 Win Over UNCW

Box Score
CHARLESTON, S.C. –
The College of Charleston women's soccer team (3-11-3, 2-5-1) closed out its home schedule in style, defeating UNCW (10-3-1, 6-2) in extra time, 3-2. The Seahawks entered the match at the top of the CAA standings with a chance to clinch the regular season title.

The Cougars stormed out of the gate on the attack. In the 5th minute, Faith Slimmer took it upon herself to get the Cougars on the board. The freshman weaved through the UNCW defense and fired a strike into the back of the net. The goal gave CofC an early 1-0 advantage over the Seahawks.

Just three minutes later, Charleston would double its lead. Olivia Freitas set up Leah Deutsch who fired it past the UNCW goalkeeper. At the 8 minute mark, the Cougars had built a 2-0 lead and put the Seahawks on their heels.

Charleston goalkeeper Meredith Holton played an excellent first half, making six saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the Seahawks off the board. The Cougars would add a couple shots throughout the first half, but the match headed to halftime with the Cougars holding a 2-0 lead.

UNCW was aggressive early in the second half, but was only able to get two shots off on the stellar CofC defense through the fist 20 minutes of second half action. The Seahawks would break through, however, in the 66th minute. UNCW cut the Cougars' lead in half with a goal, bringing the CofC advantage down to 2-1.

Charleston had opportunities to extend its lead in the 82nd and 85th minute, but just missed several shots. However, UNCW would not go quietly. In the 88th minute, the Seahawks found the equalizer. The match would enter extra time knotted up at 2-2.

Nearly eight minutes of extra time passed before the Cougars delivered one of their most memorable moments of the season. Jenna Snead delivered a perfect cross to Delaney Dawes, who headed it past the UNCW keeper for the game-winner. The Cougars won their home finale, 3-2, over the top team in the CAA.

What Coach Michner Had to Say
"I thought the game was played well from both sides today and both competed hard to win. We started fast and put them under a lot of pressure early. Two fantastic goals by Faith (Slimmer) and Leah (Deutsch) rewarded us for the effort. But UNCW slowly got back into it and really pushed us to the limit today. The girls felt confident going into overtime and knew that it would take one special moment to win it! Jenna and Delaney provided that winning moment and there's no better feeling than winning in OT. I have to say that I thought Meredith Holton was absolutely sensational today and made some huge saves throughout the game. A total team effort!"
