Cougars Draw With Jacksonville In Season Opener
2/15/2021 5:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore goalkeeper Isac Almstrom played 110 minutes in goal and recorded three saves in the College of Charleston men's soccer team's 0-0 draw with Jacksonville on Monday.
In the season opener, CofC's defense preserved the shutout despite being outshot 15-5. Sophomore midfielder Zinho Ballish had both of the team's shots on goal versus the Dolphins (1-0-1).
After freshman forward Edin Aleckovic was issued a red card in the 54th minute, the Cougars (0-0-1) played one man down for the remainder of the second half and two overtime periods.
"I am happy with our performance today," said Keith Wiggans after coaching his first game with the Cougars as head coach. "After going down to 10 men, we stayed organized and defended well, while still creating a few chances. There were a number of newcomers, who played vital roles in our result. We have to stay more disciplined, not to get cards and put ourselves in jeopardy, but our response to the red card was fantastic. There were definitely positives to take away from our first game."
The Jacksonville game was cancelled on Sunday and moved to Monday due to weather and field conditions. It was Charleston's first competition since November 5, 2019.
Up next, the Cougars will travel to Coastal Carolina for a Sunday, March 7 match scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) in Conway, S.C.
