CofC Falls to No. 17 South Carolina, 3-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's soccer squad fell in a battle with No. 17 South Carolina, 3-0, on Sunday night at Ralph Lundy Field in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
 
CofC came out firing in the opening minutes, as junior Olivia Freitas rocketed a pair of shots on frame, one off the post and one fisted away by the Gamecock keeper. The Cougars finished with three shots in the opening half and eight for the game.
 
South Carolina took advantage of set piece opportunities in the first frame, scoring on corner kicks in the 16th and 23rd minutes, respectively. Senior CofC goalkeeper Meredith Holton made a pair of saves in the first half and finished with five in the contest. The Cougars tightened up defensively in the second half, allowing just one goal on a penalty kick.

  • Freshman forward Delaney Dawes had a team-high three shots on the night, including her first career shot-on-goal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Meredith Holton posted five saves on 15 Gamecock shots. With eight saves thru two games, she now has 112 career saves.
  • Junior Olivia Freitas tallied two shots on Sunday and has 11 through two games, already just one shot shy of her season total in nine contests last season.
 
Game Notes
 
  • With five saves on Sunday, senior goalkeeper Meredith Holton moved into sole possession of eighth all-time on CofC's career saves list with 112, surpassing Kelley Gunn (111) and Emily Brenner (111).  
  • Sunday night marked the first time South Carolina played in Charleston since a 0-0 draw on Sept. 1, 2002. The Gamecocks own a 7-1-2 lead in the all-time series with the Cougars.
