Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars Shut Out Appalachian State on the Road, 2-0

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's soccer team claimed its first win of the season with a 2-0 road victory over Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. on Thursday afternoon.

After several shots on goal throughout the opening period, the Cougars broke through shortly before the half. After a hard fought, one-on-one battle with a Mountaineer defender, junior Olivia Freitas delivered her first goal of the season in the 38th minute of the match. The score gave Charleston a 1-0 advantage that it carried into the halftime break.

CofC stayed on the attack in the second half. Freshman Mary Alexander fed junior Grace Powell with a perfect cross that Powell sent into the back of the net. The goal, Powell's second of the 2021 campaign, extended Charleston's lead to 2-0.

The Mountaineers ramped up their attack in the final minutes, but the CofC defense clamped down to seal the victory.

Coach Michner's Thoughts
"It was a great win today on the road against a solid Appalachian State team," head coach Christian Michner said. "I was happy to be back on the sidelines after missing the past four games, but the story of the day was really about the team and their performance. It was nice to score two goals and we had quality chances to get several more. The shutout is huge for our confidence as well. I'm just so proud of our team. The effort they gave to each other for the entire 90 minutes was amazing."

"It's a quick turnaround as we shift our focus to Clemson on Sunday. I know the girls will be excited for that and the chance to build on the performance today."

Key Cougars
  • Olivia Freitas was due for a breakthrough before scoring in Thursday's contest. Through the first four games, the junior forward led CofC with 18 shots and nine shots on goal.
  • Mary Alexander was key for the Cougars in leading an aggressive attack throughout the afternoon, culminating in her first career assist on Grace Powell's goal.
  • The entire Charleston defense shut down Appalachian State, holding the Mountaineers to just two shots on goal.
  • Both shots on goal by App State were saved by senior Meredith Holton, bringing her season saves total to 16.

Game Notes
  • The College of Charleston continues to see quality production from its freshmen class. Mary Alexander tallied an assist and put up three shots, while Dawes was instrumental in the CofC offensive attack and picked up an assist. Dawes scored the first goal of her career in the last game against Coastal Carolina.
  • Junior Lauren Sandidge played all 90 minutes in Thursday's contest, a feat that has come to be expected. Sandidge has played all 482 minutes of Charleston's five contests.
  • Appalachian State and the College of Charleston had not met on the pitch in nearly nine years after competing as SOCON foes each season from 1998-2012.

Up Next
  • CofC will hit the road again when the Cougars travel to face Clemson on Sunday, September 5. The match kicks off at 2 p.m. ET.
