Charleston, S.C. – Charleston dropped its second straight contest on Thursday, falling just short on the road at Towson, 74-67. The physical battle went down to the wire, but the Tigers pulled away late to seal the win.
Senior John Meeks led Charleston with 16 points, scoring all of his points in a second-half flurry on 5-of-7 shooting. Freshman Ben Burnham added 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
The Cougars outrebounded Towson, 48-43, snagging 18 offensive rebounds. The two teams combined for 66 points in the paint and 48 free throw attempts during the slugfest. The Tigers were able to push in front by seven or more on multiple occasions, but each time Charleston answered the bell.
After Towson built a 19-12 lead, the Cougars surged in front with a 12-3 run on a Burnham jumper. The Tigers responded with a key 10-0 run to take an eight-point lead into the half. That lead swelled to 10 in the second half, but Charleston chipped away.
The Cougars held Towson scoreless from the 14:56 mark to the 10:26 mark and took the lead back, 41-40, on a Reyne Smith free throw. Both teams traded blows down the stretch until Towson buried two back-to-back 3-pointers to go back up eight. Charleston couldn't get over the hump in the final five minutes despite finishing with 14 points off turnovers.
