CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston junior infielder Aniz Roman was given the opportunity to intern with the Dodgers Training Academy in Los Angeles, Calif. for the second year in a row this past summer. Roman, a Montebello, California native, discovered the internship when she heard the Dodgers program was looking for softball instructors to assist with clinics and camps for young kids in the Los Angeles area.
Throughout the summer, Roman traveled to various elementary and middle schools across the Los Angeles Unified School District to teach the sport of softball to the kids in each school. Her daily schedule would usually include two camps at different schools where she would teach the young athletes how to throw, catch, and hit.
"Being able to teach the sport that I love was truly a great experience," says Roman, reflecting on her time with the Dodgers this past summer.
Roman recalls learning to problem solve throughout the summer when some camps didn't prove to go exactly as planned and needed to be adjusted to ensure the kids were benefiting the most from each lesson. She also shares that through the internship she learned how to communicate with people of all ages, specifically the young kids with whom she was sharing her passion for the sport.
While in Los Angeles, Roman was able to experience the MLB draft and All-Star Week, where she met softball greats Jennie Finch, Natasha Watley, and Lauren Chamberlain as well as MLB legend CC Sabathia. Another highlight of her summer was working camp at Dodger Stadium. Growing up in California, Roman attended countless Dodger games making the opportunity a dream come true.
