I studied abroad in July of this past summer up until the first week of August in Trujillo, Spain. I chose to study here because I am a minor in Spanish here at The College and wanted to practice speaking as well as learn their culture by living through it! Some of my favorite parts of the trip was traveling to Madrid, Sevilla, and Granada. I got to see a lot of famous paintings and other ancient Roman art, and see some of the most monumental churches where I got to see Christopher Columbus' tomb.
Learning just the way of life in Spain when it came to times that they eat dinner, the fact they take a nap and close stores in the middle of the day, and even income that most families make has made me a lot more grateful for what I have here at home. We are fortunate enough to be able to afford so many things in our life and have better access to things like great healthcare that many people in Spain and other countries don't get to have. Studying abroad also taught me that it's important to take in the world around you and let yourself breath. I take a lot more time to myself and try to be more present in conversation with people rather than sitting silently and being on my phone.
Overall, I think studying abroad is an experience everyone should take, even if it's not required for your major like it was for me. I feel I learned a lot more about myself and it changed my outlook on life completely. There is a lot more to see in this world outside of the states and this trip made me realize that I would love to see and learn more about others cultures.
