Men's Basketball Hosts Hampton in CAA Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Riding an 11-game winning streak, the College of Charleston men's basketball is set to begin CAA play tomorrow when the Cougars welcome Hampton to Charleston. Action is set for 7:00 p.m. in TD Arena.

STORYLINES
  • The College of Charleston men's basketball team opens CAA play vs. Hampton as the third team in CAA history to start the year 12-1 and the first in 37 years. (Richmond 1985-86, 16-1, George Mason, 1983-84, 12-1). This is the Cougars best start since joining the NCAA.
  • The Cougars 12-1 start is the fifth best in the nation entering conference play. This will be the first CAA meeting between the Cougars and Pirates. The only other meeting between the programs was on December 28, 1999, when Charleston defeated Hampton 76-58.
  • Pat Kelsey's program is currently one spot out of the AP Top 25 Poll with 102 points, just ten points behind No. 25 North Carolina who has 112. The Tar Heels are the Cougars' only loss of the year.
  • Charleston stays put at 53 in the NCAA Division I NET Rankings while sitting at #36 in Andy Katz Power Rankings produced by the NCAA.
  • The Cougars and Pirates rank on opposite ends of scoring margins in the league which Charleston leading the CAA at 9.2 with Hampton coming in at 12th with a -8.8 margin.
  • CofC last played on December 19 when they defeated Coastal Carolina 83-69 in Conway. The Cougars sank 14 3-pointers, a season-high vs. Division I opponents. Reyne Smith was 5-10 from behind the arc to lead all scorers with 23 points.
  • The Pirates are coming off a 0-2 performance at the Boost Mobile HBCU Challenge hosted by Chris Paul in Las Vegas. Hampton used a seven-man rotation vs. Texas State, something to watch against the Cougars' 10-man rotation.
RECEIVING RECOGNITION
  • The Cougars have been rewarded for their efforts and are receiving votes in both major polls and are currently ranked #2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
  • Kelsey's squad received 102 points in the latest AP Poll, one spot outside of the top 25.
  • Charleston is ranked 53 in the NET Rankings of the season with two Q1 wins over Kent State and Virginia Tech.
WE CALL THAT A STREAK
  • Charleston is 12-1 with wins over five NCAA Tournament teams and three defending conference champions (ACC, A10, SoCon), a title in the Charleston Classic, and the lone setback at preseason No. 1 North Carolina followed by a current 11-game winning streak. Charleston is the third team in CAA history to open the year 12-1 or better, joining the 1985-86 Richmond squad (16-1) and the 1983-84 George Mason team (12-1).

  • Concession stands will open when doors open, and the Cougar Spirit Shop will open one hour prior to tipoff.
  • The TD Arena Box Office is open Monday – Friday beginning at 9AM and opens 3 hours prior to tipoff for Saturday & Sunday games. Tickets can be purchased at www.cofcsports.com/tickets
  • If you selected mobile tickets, add your tickets to your Apple Wallet or Google Pay App prior to arriving at TD Arena for the smoothest entry experience.
