The Cougars are seeking their fourth CAA title since 2014
SOUTHPORT, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team is set to play in the CAA Championship this weekend from Friday, April 15th to Sunday, April 17th. The tournament will be held in Southport, N.C. and features eight teams duking it out at the Reserve Club at St. James. Teams will play 54 holes on the 5,998-yard, par-72 course with pairings teeing off at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
The Cougars were the CAA runner-up last season led by Viktoria Hund, who placed 2nd individually. The second-place finish helped the Cougars snag an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional. CofC won the CAA title in 2014, 2015 and 2018, entering the 2022 event seeking its first league championship in three years and fourth since joining the CAA.
"The team had a great spring season," head coach Jamie Futrell said. "This place has been good to us in the past. If we continue to play at the level we have been playing, we will have a great chance to win another CAA Championship at St. James."
A win at the CAA Championships this weekend would clinch the Cougars' ninth NCAA Regional appearance in program history with an automatic bid. CofC will face off against seven other teams including Delaware, Elon, Hofstra, Towson, UNCW, and William & Mary. James Madison's entrants will be eligible for individual medalist honors, but not the team competition.
CofC ranks 58th nationally, the highest of any CAA team entering this weekend's tournament. The Cougars are riding momentum after a first place performance at the Ironwood Invitational last week. Freshman Mary Kathryn Talledo earned co-medalist honors at the Ironwood and captured CAA Golfer of the Week honors. CofC launches the postseason with two tournament wins and six Top-5 finishes during the 2021-22 campaign under its belt.
Talledo will lead the Cougars' lineup followed by senior Jodee Tindal in the second spot. Tindal is coming off her best tournament of the season at the Ironwood in which she finished T-3 overall. Sophomore Viktoria Hund and freshman Emma Schimpf will be in the third and fourth spots, respectively. Hund and Schimpf have both earned medalist honors and CAA Golfer of the Week awards at some point this season. Smith Knaffle will hold down the fifth and final spot in the lineup after placing T-48 at the Ironwood earlier this month.
