MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston defense along with forward Grace Powell continued their red-hot play on Wednesday night in a 2-0 win over Charleston Southern at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
The Cougars improved to 5-2 with all their wins coming by shutout and remained undefeated in four home games. Charleston has not allowed a goal in its last three games and takes a streak of 300:56 consecutive scoreless minutes into Sunday's home match against Appalachian State.
The Cougars have won 18 of the last 20 meetings with their crosstown rival, with the other two ending in ties. Charleston has five victories in its first seven games for the first time since starting the 2008 season with seven straight wins.
"This was an incredible effort from my group tonight against a well-coached CSU team," said head coach Christian Michner. "In local derbies you can always feel the intensity. We scored early and late to notch another famous win in this series. I couldn't be prouder of the way this team continues to win in different ways."
Powell scored the second Cougar goal in the 77th minute off an assist by Bubbles Dever. Powell, the reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week, has a team-leading five goals on the season including four in the past three games. Dever took over the top spot on the team with her fourth assist.
Charleston took a quick 1-0 lead when Olivia Freitas scored her third goal of the season on a pass from Mary Alexander just 1:06 into the contest. The Cougars finished with a 13-11 lead in shots and took nine corners to none for CSU. Savannah Barron went the distance in goal and made three saves.
Sunday's 1 p.m. game against the Mountaineers will serve as Senior Day for the 2022 season. Prior to the match, the women's soccer program will honor Powell, Freitas, Lauren Sandidge, Natalie Sgro and Jenna Snead.
