MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston erupted for five goals in the second half and turned in a total team effort in a 5-1 victory over Georgia Southern on Tuesday night at Ralph Lundy Field.
The Cougars scored the most goals in a game since a 5-3 win over UNC Asheville on September 15, 2021 and had the highest scoring output by a CAA team against a Division I opponent this season. It also snapped a four-game losing streak against their former Southern Conference rival.
Charleston trailed 1-0 at halftime before scoring three times in a span of 15 minutes to take command. Chris Cushing got the show going when he took a perfectly placed corner from Leonardo D'Ambrosio and scored to level the match in the 53rd minute. The assist was the team-leading fifth of the season for D'Ambrosio.
The Cougars were just getting started. Five minutes later, Chris Elliott assisted on a goal by Iker Carew and then scored himself in the 68th minute for the first of his two on the night. Peter Thomas was credited with the assist on the Elliott tally.
"I'm really proud of the guys' effort in the second half," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "The intensity in our press and attack was exactly what they asked of themselves at halftime. We created chances and finished them tonight. It was great to see results of what we constantly work on."
Charleston's teamwork was on full display as the goal-scoring parade continued. Thomas temporarily moved into sole possession of the team lead in goals when he scored his fourth of the year in the 81st minute before Elliott tied him and put a bow on the victory four minutes later.
Ezra White and Damon Williams assisted on the Thomas goal, and Lucas Cedermark and Samuel Bass combined to aid Elliott on his second tally. In all, the Cougars racked up seven assists on their five goals. On the defensive end, Charleston limited the Eagles to only 10 shots and just five on goal with Eric Wnorowski making four saves.
The Cougars return to CAA play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at William & Mary.
