CHARLESTON, S.C. – Two teams looking to inch closer to a spot in the CAA Tournament meet on Saturday when the Cougars visit William & Mary for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Martin Family Stadium.
Both teams have five points and are in a five-way tie for sixth place along with Delaware, UNCW and Campbell. That group is one point behind Northeastern and two shy of Monmouth in the battle for entry in the six-team field.
There are three conference games remaining in the regular season for each of those teams except for Northeastern, which has just two left. The CAA Tournament begins on November 2 at the site of the top two seeds.
Following Saturday's game, the Cougars have conference matches remaining at home against Elon on October 21 and at Delaware the following Saturday.
Charleston is coming off an impressive 5-1 win over Georgia Southern on Tuesday. Chris Elliott scored a pair of goals and added an assist, and Peter Thomas had a goal and assist in the highest-scoring game by a CAA team against a Division I opponent this season. Elliott and Thomas are tied for the team lead with four goals.
William & Mary has played to three consecutive draws including CAA deadlocks against Drexel and UNCW. The Tribe's conference win was a 1-0 victory at home against Northeastern.
William & Mary has controlled the all-time series against the Cougars with 13 wins and three draws in 18 matches. Last year's game at Ralph Lundy Field ended in a 2-2 tie with Elliott scoring both Charleston goals. The Cougars are seeking their first result ever in eight contests in Williamsburg.
