WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Peter Thomas scored two goals seven minutes apart late in the first half to power College of Charleston to a 3-2 win at William & Mary in a key CAA contest Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (2-2-2 in the CAA) put themselves squarely in the hunt for a postseason berth with eight points and conference games remaining at home against Elon next Saturday and at Delaware on October 28.
The win was the first on the road for the Cougars since a 4-3 overtime victory at Delaware on October 16, 2021 and the first in nine games all-time in Williamsburg.
The Cougars continued their scoring surge that began with five goals in the second half against Georgia Southern on Thursday when Iker Carew converted a direct kick from just outside the top of the box in the 12th minute for an early 1-0 lead.
Thomas scored his first goal of the day in the 32nd minute when he took a feed from Leonardo D'Ambrosio and fired a rocket over the outstretched keeper's hand for a 2-0 lead. D'Ambrosio has assists in four of the past six games and a team-leading six on the season.
The Tribe cut the deficit to one in the 39th minute, but it took just 35 seconds for the Cougars to answer. Lucas Cedermark stole a pass at midfield and got it ahead to Thomas, who made a nifty move around a defender to produce his team-best sixth goal of the year.
"The team worked really hard today. I don't think we performed our best, but we showed a lot of grit to hold on for the win," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "The guys have really started to understand what it means to be a team and compete for each other. If they continue with that mindset, we can continue to have more success.
"We have goals that we haven't achieved yet, so we will keep pushing for more."
The Cougars are back at Ralph Lundy Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they begin a three-game homestand with a non-conference game against USC Upstate.
