Cougars Continue Offensive Onslaught in Win Over USC Upstate

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston earned its third straight victory and continued its goal-scoring surge in a 5-2 win over USC Upstate on Tuesday at Ralph Lundy Field.

The Cougars (5-4-5) have scored 13 goals during the winning streak, the most in a three-game stretch since 1998. Charleston also has at least three goals in three straight games for the first time since 2010.

Peter Thomas got the scoring started in the sixth minute with his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Freshman Matt Lenert made it a 2-0 game at halftime with his first career goal with Chris Elliott and Leonardo D'Ambrosio combining for the assist.

The helper was D'Ambrosio's seventh of the year to move him into a tie for third in the CAA. He then scored a goal of his own, and Samuel Bass added another to up the Cougar lead to 4-0 in the 73rd minute.

Upstate scored a pair of goals to cut its deficit in half before Conner Walmsley put the icing on the cake for the Cougars when the senior scored his first career goal in the final minute.

"I am pleased with our ability to take our chances tonight, and it's nice to see a number of different people scoring goals," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "I don't think we played our best, and I am frustrated with conceding two goals late in the game, but it is great we are scoring. Down the stretch we have to be better in managing games when we have the lead."

Bass also had an assist in addition to his goal, and Iker Carew, Lucas Cedermark, Chris Matlashewski and Tom Wilson also had assists. The Cougars finished with 20 shots, including 11 on target, and Eric Wnorowski made five saves.

Charleston returns to CAA play when it hosts Elon for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
