MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Leonardo D'Ambrosio scored a goal and assisted on another to lead College of Charleston to a 2-0 win over Winthrop in its final home game and non-conference match of the season.
The Cougars (6-5-5) now turn their attention to an all-important CAA finale at Delaware on Saturday needing a win or tie to keep their hopes alive for a berth in the six-team conference tournament.
D'Ambrosio scored his fifth goal of the season in the third minute on the end of passes from
Iker Carew and
Samuel Bass.
Tom Wilson gave the Cougars an insurance tally in the 69th minute with his second career goal. D'Ambrosio initiated the play with a corner kick, and
Matt Lenert also earned an assist.
D'Ambrosio now has eight assists on the year to move into third place in the CAA. He also took over the team lead in scoring with 18 points.
"I'm really proud of the group today," said head coach
Keith Wiggans. "We played as a team, we shared the ball well, defended well and worked really hard for each other. Through our ups and downs this season, the team has been resilient."
Charleston took 10 shots in both halves and finished with a 20-10 advantage in that department.
Eric Wnorowski made three saves to earn his fourth win and first clean sheet since taking over in goal eight games ago.
"We will recover quickly and get ready for a must-win match at Delaware," said Wiggans. "It's always tough to go on the road in this conference, but I'm confident in our guys that we can get the job done on Saturday."
