Stony Brook Edges Cougars on Saturday

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Stony Brook took advantage of a red card just outside the box to score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over College of Charleston at Ralph Lundy Field.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 1-2-2 in CAA play and keeps them in a tie for sixth pending the results of Saturday night contests. The conference-leading Seawolves remained undefeated in the CAA with a 4-0-2 mark.
In the 39th minute, Conner Walmsley was assessed a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity. On the ensuing free kick Lorenzo Selini tapped the ball to Jonas Bickus, and Bickus beat Eric Wnorowski to his left for what proved to be the game winner.
"This was a tough loss to a good team. We aren't doing enough to get a win," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "You have to put more effort and sacrifice to win in this game, and we aren't doing that. We will be better moving forward."
Aside from the one goal, it was an evenly played match with Stony Brook holding a 12-11 edge in shots and both teams taking five corners. Peter Thomas led Charleston with three shots, and Wnorowski made six saves including five in the second half to keep it a tight contest.
The Cougars wrap up their three-game homestand on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game against Georgia Southern.
