CHARLESTON, S.C. – After seeing all five of its games canceled by weather last weekend, the College of Charleston softball team will get its 2023 season underway Wednesday with a 6 p.m. contest at South Carolina.
The Cougars managed to play only into the bottom of the first against Chattanooga on Friday but got a hint of the future. Freshman pitcher Caroline Conner fanned two in the top of the inning, and fellow first-year player Karlee Hughes homered in the bottom of the frame. Unfortunately, those statistics will not count.
The Gamecocks began their season by taking two of three at the Charlotte Invitational, defeating Miami (Ohio) and Campbell and losing to the host 49ers. Giulia Desiderio went 5-for-8, and Marissa Gonzalez had four hits including three doubles. Both players had three RBI in the tournament.
South Carolina has won 13 of 14 games in the series against the Cougars including all 11 in Columbia. Charleston's lone win was a 2-1 victory on February 8, 2009 in the last home game against the Gamecocks.
Following Wednesday's game, Charleston will host the Cougar Classic at Patriots Point from Friday through Sunday with Boston University, Tennessee Tech and Canisius providing the opposition.
