Cougar Runners Star in 800 and 5000 at South Carolina Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team received outstanding performances from its 800 and 5000 runners on Saturday to conclude action at the South Carolina Invitational.
Five Cougars turned in PRs in the 800 led by Rhian Purves, who sliced more than six seconds off her previous career best with a time of 2:13.99. The senior leapt all the way from seventh to second in the school record book and finished 18th in a field of over 90 runners.
Meike Kalus entered the top 10 at No. 6 with her time of 2:18.61, and Emily Dorony (2:17.29), Andie Harding (2:19.29) and Grace McGrew (2:24.86) also had PRs. Harding remained eighth in school history while Dorony dropped a spot from third to fourth.
Cayden Crismon and Sophia Brown became the newest members of the record book in the 5000 and took second and third place, respectively, in the invite section of the event. Crismon now ranks fourth at the distance with a time of 17:42.20, and Brown is seventh with a mark of 17:58.45.
Emma Fortuna and Kylie Dougherty both matched their season in the high jump by clearing the bar at 1.50m (4'11"), just .03 meters shy of cracking the top 10.
Alicia Wilson was the top Cougar in the 200 with a time of 27.51 and teamed with Emily Kreek, Kaitlynn Bailey and Kirsten McKenna to run the 4x400 relay in 4:05.76, less than one second shy of the top 10.
Charleston is off until February 22-23 when it competes in the inaugural CAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va.
