Charleston Splits Friday Duals at Beach Blast

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston beach volleyball split their two matches Friday at the 2023 Beach Blast falling to UNCW and downing Erskine.

Final (Match One): UNCW 4, Charleston 1 

Final (Match Two): Charleston 5, Erskine 0

Records: Charleston (9-6, 2-3 Sun Belt), UNCW (8-5), Erskine (2-14) 

How It Happened 

  • Charleston and UNCW split a pair of three-set matches on courts two and four to open play but the Seahawks would take the final three for a 4-1 decision. 

  • Charleston rebounded quickly in their second match of the day jumping out to a 2-0 lead on two and four and never looking back. 

  • The Cougars swept on four of the five courts against Erksine then completed a comeback win on five to make it a clean 5-0 sweep. 

  • Sofie Vogel and Tynley Smeltzer paced the Cougars with a 2-0 day on court four taking a three-set thriller over their UNCW counterparts then sweeping away their opponent from Erskine.

Charleston wraps up the 2023 Beach Blast Saturday with a noon and 2p.m. match against UNCW and Erskine. Charleston will recognize their six seniors – Gabi Bailey, Kyra Thompson, Alli Grant Avery, Mikaela Dougherty, Ella Reames and Emma Falk – prior to their 12 p.m. match against the Seahawks.
