CHARLESTON, S.C. – Riding a four-game win streak in which they've scored eight-plus in each of the last three, College of Charleston welcomes CAA rival Elon for a crucial series to close the month of April from Patriots Point.
Â
Charleston has swept back-to-back weekends including an historic showing on the Jersey Shore two weeks ago while Elon comes in having dropped their last two weekend series in CAA play to William & Mary and Stony Brook. The Cougars took down Georgia Southern on the road Wednesday night 8-5 while the Phoenix grabbed their second Top-10 win the same night downing No. 8/9 Campbell 6-5 at home.
Â
Pitching has been the name of the game for both sides as all five announced starters rank among the Top-15 in the CAA in ERA. Both teams fill up the zone with strike throwers sitting second and third in the league in total strikeouts and third and fourth in Team ERA.
Â
Both teams also enter the weekend among the nation's Top-80 in the RPI rankings. The race for the CAA Regular Season Title also heats up as the Phoenix are the first of three weekend series against the current Top-4 in the league for Charleston to close the season (UNCW May 12-14 and Northeastern May 18-20).
Â
Both teams also have a two-way player excelling in both phases of the game with
Cole Mathis leading the Cougars in batting average, home runs, RBI, slugging and OPS while sitting third in ERA, innings and strikeouts as the Sunday starter. Elon's Ryan Sprock sits third on the team in batting average, home runs and slugging while starting 10 games on the mound with the third-best ERA and second-most innings pitched.
Â
Scouting the Phoenix
- Pitching is the strong suit for Elon as the Phoenix rank third in Team ERA in the CAA posting a 3.89 led by the three-man rotation of Shea Sprague (5-3, 3.05), Justin Mitrovich (5-2, 2.74) and Ryan Sprock (3-1, 3.70).
- The Phoenix rank among the top-5 in the CAA in ERA (3.89), strikeouts (356), opponents' batting average (.258) and walks issued (111).
- Three hitters in the everyday lineup are hitting above .300 for the Phoenix led by Justin Cassella's .325 mark with 10 home runs and 28 RBI. Cole Reynolds is hitting .307 with seven long balls and team-high 32 RBI while Ryan Sprock has a .302 average with six homers and 24 RBI.
- As a team though, Elon is hitting just .267 but have made their hits count hitting the third-most HR's (52) and scoring the fifth-most runs (264) in the league. The Phoenix have hit into the fewest double plays on the season – still just six through 40 games played, the only CAA team still in single digits in that category.

- Charleston owns the all-time series lead 40-28 winners of five-straight dating back to the 2021 CAA Championships. The two have met six times in postseason play at the CAA Tournament with Charleston holding a 5-1 edge in that setting.
- Charleston swept the Phoenix last season on the road outscoring them 22-5 and posting at least eight runs in two of the contests. In the postseason, Charleston completed a four-game sweep over the course of the season taking a 6-1 decision.
