CHARLESTON, S.C. – Fourth-seeded College of Charleston fell to fifth-seeded Delaware 7-4 Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the 2023 CAA Baseball Championships from Patriots Point.
Charleston jumped out to a 3-0 behind RBI singles from
Tanner Steffy and
Cam Dean and a sacrifice fly from
Khyree Miller in the second.
Delaware loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth and scored three to tie it, then took their first lead on a Tyler Leach two-run homer to left in the sixth.
Cole Mathis singled through the left side in the seventh to bring the Cougars back within 5-4, but freshman reliever Anthony Gubitosi held the Cougars there the rest of the way. Delaware would add two in the top of the ninth for the three-run win.

How It Happened
- Tanner Steffy got the Cougar scoring started for a second-straight game singling home Trotter Harlan in the second inning.
- Cam Dean added an RBI single and Khyree Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-0 Cougar advantage after two complete.
- Delaware scored three of their own in the fourth inning after loading the bases, getting singles from Andre Amato and Tyler Leach.
- Leach put the Blue Hens ahead 5-3 two innings later with a two-run homer to left field.
- Charleston got one back in the seventh on a Cole Mathis single, bringing it back to 5-4, but Delaware was able to strand the tying run at third then the tying run once again in the eighth.
- Delaware scratch across two insurance runs in the top of the ninth for the 7-4 final.
Notes
- Tanner Steffy had the Cougars' first RBI of the day for a second-straight game (three-run homer at Northeastern May 20) singling home Trotter Harlan.
- Cam Dean, Joseph Mershon, Steffy and Harlan all finished the day with two hits and Cole Mathis, Steffy, Dean and Miller collecting an RBI.
- Steffy's two-hit day gives the graduate senior 11 career hits in the CAA tournament while Harlan collected hit No. 13 of his postseason career.
