MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston battled to a 1-1 draw against UNCW on Saturday night at Ralph Lundy Field to remain unbeaten after six games.

The Cougars are 2-0-4 overall and 1-0-2 in the CAA, marking the longest undefeated streak since 2017 when they won six and tied three in a nine-game stretch. It also kept Charleston without a loss in its last 12 home games (8-0-4) dating back to the end of the 2021 season.

The first half was evenly played with the Cougars taking a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Leonardo D'Ambrosio re-directed a pass from Peter Thomas into the back of the net for his second score of the year. The junior from Italy has six goals in his career while Thomas had the second assist of his freshman season.

The Seahawks (4-1-2, 0-1-1 CAA) took control in the second half, taking 10 of their 15 shots and earning six of their 10 corner kicks. The pressure paid off in the 64th minute when UNCW tied it on a goal by Josef Hefele.

Olly Marshall made five saves for the Cougars, and Jacob Randolph stopped three shots for UNCW.

"I am disappointed with our performance tonight. I think we had an okay first half but came out flat in in the second half," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "My challenge to the team was to outwork them, but I don't think that happened tonight. 

"Going down to 10 men with 20 minutes left (on a red card issued to Thomas) obviously changed the game. I am proud of their resilience to preserve one point, but that was not our objective tonight. Credit to UNCW, though, as they are a talented team."

The Cougars play a pair of non-conference games in their next two outings, visiting Furman on Tuesday and Duke on September 26 before resuming CAA action on September 30 at Monmouth.
