Tribe Tops Cougars in Five Sets Sunday

WILLIAMSBURG Va. --- College of Charleston volleyball fell in five sets for the second time in as many days Sunday concluding their CAA-opening weekend with a 3-2 loss (18-25, 17-25, 26-24, 26-24, 15-13) to William & Mary.
 
Charleston saw career-best performances from Sofie Vogel (12 kills) and Olivia Mae Van Der Werff (11 kills) on the attack and Vogel on the block (9 blocks) but fell in the final three sets by six combined points Sunday – two sets going to extra points. Four Cougars also finished the match with double digit kills – Anna Smith (18), Lexi Wierzbicki (16), Vogel (12) and Van Der Werff (11) – and Lexi Wierzbicki recorded her third double-double of the season.
 
William & Mary got a match-high 23 kills from Taylor Burrell and 18 from Sarah Callender in the comeback win.

Critical Point
Charleston was able to erase another early hole in the fifth set Sunday, but after Charleston grabbed a 12-11 lead the Tribe put down two kills and a block to steal the fifth and deciding set.
 
Key Cougars
  • Sofie Vogel had a career-best match on the attack and block putting down 12 kills and deterring nine Tribe attempts.
  • Olivia Mae Van Der Werff soared past her previous career-high with 11 kills Sunday putting down three in the opening set and four in the third. The sophomore Lansing, Kansas native also had a team-best .286 attack percentage on the day and five blocks.
  • Lexi Wierzbicki recorded her third double-double of the season posting 16 kills and 16 digs while adding four blocks.
  • Anna Smith led the Cougars in kills for a second-straight match finishing with 18 – just one shy of matching her career-high mark.
  • Jasmin Goei turned in the first 50-assist performance by a Cougar this season finishing with an even 10.0 assists/set.
 
Match Notes
  • Charleston had four attackers finish the day with double-digit kills for the first time this campaign – Anna Smith (18), Lexi Wierzbicki (16), Sofie Vogel (12) and Olivia Mae Van Der Werff (11).
  • Smith and Wierzbicki became the first tandem to land 15-plus kills in a single match.
  • Sopheea Mink tied a career-best with six blocks – she and Sofie Vogel became the first duo to block six-or-more attempts in a single match.
  • After not playing a five-set match all of nonconference, Charleston played back-to-back full-length matches to open CAA play.
  • Tynley Smeltzer had a team-high 27 digs in her second-straight start at libero, giving the junior Savannah, Ga. native over 700 digs in her career.
