Charleston Sweeps Stony Brook Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- College of Charleston volleyball fended off Stony Brook in two tight sets to open the match before putting their foot on the gas in the third for a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-23, 25-13).
 
Lexi Wierzbicki paced the Cougar (4-10, 1-2 CAA) attack with 14 kills and three service aces and .324 attack percentage while Olivia Mae Van Der Werff added nine kills on 16 swings and a service ace. Tynley Smeltzer and Elli Kinney led the Charleston backline with 16 digs apiece as the Cougars outhit the Seawolves .284 to .147 in the sweep.
 
Stony Brook (4-9, 0-3 CAA) was led by Leoni Kuntz' nine kills and Julia Patsos' 18 digs in the loss.
 
Charleston's win Saturday in front of the home crowd was No. 100 in CAA regular season play since the program joined the league, one of just two schools with 100-plus wins since the start of the 2013 season.

Critical Point
Stony Brook pushed the Cougars in the first two sets and got within and 18-12 margin in the third, but a kill from Cailyn Bolser jumpstarted a 7-1 run to close out the match for Charleston.
 
Key Cougars
  • Jasmin Goei had 30-plus assists for a second-straight match to lead the Cougars at the pivot. The junior setter is up to an 8.75 assists/set in conference play.
  • Tynley Smeltzer and Elli Kinney led a strong Cougar backline with 16 digs each in an effort to hold the Seawolves to just .147 on their attack. No attacker for Stony Brook was able to reach double digit kills on the day.
  • The trio of Goei, Lexi Wierzbicki and Chandler Manusky all added five-plus digs in the defensive effort.
  • Wierzbicki led all players with 14 kills and three service aces as she hit .324 across all three sets.
  • Olivia Mae Van Der Werff added nine kills and hit a team-high .375 on 16 swings while adding a service ace.
  • Cailyn Bolser finished a perfect 5-for-5 on her attempts adding a block. Three of her five kills came in the second set helping the Cougars stave off a Stony Brook comeback attempt before the Cougars closed the door in the third.
 
Match Notes
  • Charleston collected their 100th CAA regular season win as a program in the sweep.
  • The Cougars improved to 3-0 against Stony Brook, all three matchups coming the last two seasons since becoming league mates.
  • Lexi Wierzbicki led the Cougars with 14 kills and 3 service aces, the fifth time the graduate outside hitter has paced the Charleston attack in kills. She also matched a career-high with her three aces.
  • Saturday was the third-straight match the Cougar defense held their opponent below a .200 attack percentage to open conference play.
  • Tynley Smeltzer led the Cougars in digs for a fifth-straight match while freshman Elli Kinney added 16 of her own.
  • Charleston hit a match-high .343 in the third set putting down 13 kills and committing just one error. The Cougars also had three of their six service aces to keep the Seawolves at arm's length down the stretch.
