STATESBORO, GA. – Mary Alexander brought College of Charleston into a 1-1 tie early in the first half before Georgia Southern scored the final two goals in a 3-1 win over the Cougars on Sunday in Statesboro.
The Eagles jumped out in front just 20 seconds into the game, but Charleston (0-4-1) responded in the eighth minute when Alexander scored her fifth career goal. After Georgia Southern (4-1) went back ahead in the 22nd minute, the Cougars upped the pressure on the Eagle defense.
The Charleston attack produced seven shots in the final 13 minutes of the first half, including three on target and another by
Olivia Freitas that hit the left post. The Cougars finished the first half with nine shots to eight for Georgia Southern.
The momentum continued into the second half with
Bella Antonio firing two early shots. However, the effort on the offensive end was unable to produce the equalizer, and the Eagles added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute.
Both teams finished with 15 shots with the Cougars taking six on goal.
Savannah Barron played the first half and made two saves before
Bailey Wood took over after the break and was also credited with a pair of saves. Quinn Wilson stopped five shots for the Eagles.
The Cougars return home to start their CAA schedule when they host Hampton on Thursday at 7 p.m.
