CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four College of Charleston players scored two goals in a record-setting night as the Cougars cruised to an 11-1 win over Hampton in the CAA opener at Ralph Lundy Field.
Olivia Freitas,
Delaney Dawes,
Shea Vidovic and
Bella Antonio each found the back of the net twice to help the Cougars eclipse by two the record for most goals scored in a game, and Charleston also set a new mark with 11 assists.
Lilli Ray,
Grace Powell and
Chloe Howard added goals, and Vidovic, Antonio and
Abby Fisher each had a pair of assists. The six points scored by freshmen Vidovic and Antonio are one shy of the seven tallied by Kristin Rhyne in 2003.
"I am really proud of both the effort and performance tonight from the Cougs," said head coach
Christian Michner. "We talked about being ready to start fast and continue to regulate the tempo throughout the match. The girls were brilliant and created great scoring opportunities all night.
"But we have to be ready to go again Sunday at Towson and bring this same effort with us."Â
The game between the Cougars and Tigers kicks off at 1 p.m.
The Cougars wasted little time putting the game out of reach. Antonio, Freitas and Vidovic all scored in the opening 4:20, and Freitas added her second of the night and 10th of her career to make it a 4-0 game at halftime.
The onslaught continued after the break with Charleston scoring seven times, one shy of the school record for most goals in a half. Powell had her first of the season on a PK after leading the Cougars with eight a year ago.
Charleston finished with 32 shots and set another school record with 23 shots on goal. The Pirates were limited to four attempts and avoided the shutout with a PK in the 76th minute.
