CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston baseball team moved to 2-0 on Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Marshall. The Cougars jumped out in front early and rode strong pitching from starter
Aidan Hunter and reliever
Emmett Bice. The two combined for eight strikeouts in a shutout effort.
Charleston got things going in the first inning when
Dariyan Pendergrass doubled down the left field line. Pendergrass then stole third before
Cole Mathis walked to put runners on the corners for
Trotter Harlan. Harlan skied one to center to bring in Pendergrass on a sacrifice fly. Herd starter Cole Agemy limited the damage to just one run.Â
In the second, Charleston extended the lead in the second inning through a
Dylan Johnson homer to left, the transfer's first for the Cougars. Later in the inning,
Tyler Sorrentino scored on a Pendergrass double to push the lead to 3-0. In the third, Charleston pushed the lead to 5-0 through a
Kevin Madden two-RBI double.Â
On the mound, Hunter was dealing. The junior allowed just one hit through three innings, keeping his pitch count down low. A one-out Marshall single in the fourth looked to create some issues but Hunter induced a five-four-three double play to end the inning. Hunter's day was done at the start of the seventh as
Emmett Bice came in relief. Bice picks things right back up with four strikeouts and one hit allowed in three innings.Â
