Men's Basketball Faces Stony Brook in CAA Title Game

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  The top seeded College of Charleston men's basketball team will take on No. 7 Stony Brook in the title game of the 2024 Jersey Mike's CAA Men's Basketball Championship. The Cougars are looking for their second straight league title and trip to March Madness. With a win, the Cougars would become the first team to win back-to-back CAA championships since UNCW in 2016 and 2017. 

Charleston earned a spot in the game with a thrilling 61-56 win over Towson in the semifinals. Down by as much as seven, the Cougars ended the game on a 13-1 run to defeat the Tigers. Several Cougars came through in clutch moments, including Reyne Smith with a floater at the buzzer to give Charleston a half time lead, CJ Fulton with a emphatic triple to cut the Tiger edge to three with two minutes to play, and a big Ante Brzovic block and dunk in the final minute of play. 

Stony Brook earned their spot in the game with a 63-59 win over Long Island rival No. 2 Hofstra. The Seawolves will be playing in their fourth game in four days with a 75-65 first round win over No. 10 Northeastern and a double overtime 91-88 win over No. 2 Drexel in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The Cougars defeated the Seawolves 93-87 on January 6 in their only meeting this season in Stony Brook. Smith had 20 points for Charleston followed by Kobe Rodgers with 19, Brzovic with 18, Bryce Butler with 14 and Fulton with 13. The Charleston bench outscored Stony Brook 33-14 and shot over 50% from the field while making 13 threes.The game featured 17 lead changes and seven ties.

Pat Kelsey's program enters the championship battle with 11 straight wins, the second longest winning streak in the country behind James Madison. Charleston currently ranks ninth in the nation in bench points per game (30.61), third in three point attempts per game (30.6), and ninth in total threes per game (10.5). Fulton continues to lead the nation in assist/turnover ratio (4.42).
