CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team dropped a 8-4 decision to Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The Seawolves took an early advantage with five runs scored in the opening inning and followed up with two more unearned runs in the second frame for a 7-0 lead.
Ryley Kutter came in for relief and retired nine straight batters for four scoreless innings.
The Cougars rallied in the third to produce four runs ignited by back-to-back hits from rookies Kaytlin Stacey and Savannah Lockhart. Brooke Marquez continued the hot hitting streak with an RBI single, and Halle Cannon walked with the bases loaded. Malaka Belser then hit a two-RBI single to bring the Cougars within three.
Both teams fell scoreless for the next three innings until the Seawolves hit a solo home run to add to their advantage, and Charleston was unable to respond in the final frame.
The Cougars and Seawolves will wrap up the series Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
