Baseball Travels to Georgia Southern

3/18/2024 12:45:00 PM

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston baseball team travels to Georgia Southern on Tuesday for a midweek game with the Eagles. This will be the Cougars first game played away from Patriots Point this season after an 18-game homestand to open the year. Tuesday's game will also serve as game one of a season series with the Eagles. Charleston is scheduled to travel to Statesboro again next week before hosting on April 2nd. The two teams met twice last season with Charleston winning both games. In total, the two programs have played every year since 1999, continuing to play each other after both programs left the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern owns a slight 38-36 edge in the all-time series.

Last Time Out

Charleston picked up a series win over the weekend against Wofford. Sophomore pitcher Jake Brink tossed an eight inning shutout to led the Cougars to a 4-0 game one win. After a narrow 3-2 defeat in game two, the Cougars bounced back to take series with an 11-7 win in game three.

Connor Campbell tossed five shutout innings in the game three win. Leading 3-0 in the 5th, a two-RBI double by Dylan Jonhson put the Cougars up 5-0. Charleston then broke the game open with a six run frame in the 6th that was capped off by a Cole Singsank two-run homer. Singsank raised his average to .327 against the Terriers and now owns the team lead in homers with five. Will Baumhofer also enjoyed a solid 5-for-11 weekend at the plate. Since moving into the lead off spot, Baumhofer owns an eight game hitting streak and now leads the Cougars in average (.415) and on-base percentage (.564).

Scouting the Eagles

Georgia Southern enters the game with a record of 9-10. The Eagles have played a difficult schedule to start, opening with eight power five opponents in their first 12 games. The Eagles dropped two of three against Maryland and Mississippi State while also dropping midweek games against Georgia Tech and Georgia. They also took on CAA-foe Campbell, winning one of three against the then ranked #21 Camels. The Eagles started Sun Belt play last weekend. After dropping the first two, they avoided a sweep against Old Dominion on Sunday with a 2-1 win against the Monarchs. Before taking on ODU, Georgia Southern had won four straight by sweeping Radford and topping Kennesaw State in a midweek game.

Josh Tate is the top hitter for the Eagles, owning a .342 average with a team high 26 hits, 20 runs and 12 steals. Kent Schmidt is second among qualified hitters with a .333 average and team high five doubles.
