RICHMOND, Va. – College of Charleston student-athletes Emma Appleman, Jenna Snead, and Peyton Brotzman have earned 2023-24 CAA Leadership and Sports Excellence Awards for their respective sports announced Thursday by the league.
One student-athlete, who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements, was selected in 21 sports sponsored by the conference. The CAA's Faculty Athletic Representatives voted on the winners.
"Jenna, Emma, and Peyton represent the best of the College of Charleston. They actively sought out opportunities to engage, learn, and contribute off the court or field while also performing at a high level athletically and thus are deserving of this honor," said Deputy Athletic Director/SWA Kater Tiller "As graduates, Jenna and Peyton are leaving a lasting impact on their teammates and our department. We're excited to see Emma continue to do great things during her senior year at Charleston as a team captain, co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a member of Cougar Launch, and a scholar in the classroom as she prepares for the next step in her future."
Appleman, a rising senior from Guilford, Conn, was a captain for the Cougars this past fall on the volleyball court. An active SAAC member, she was instrumental in planning the program's annual Dig Pink contest. Appleman is also involved with the department's Cougar Launch program and will serve as SAAC Co-President this upcoming semester.
"I am so proud of Emma. She is a great representative for our program and the College of Charleston. Her leadership and dedication to our program and her teammates is second to none," said head volleyball coach Jason Kepner. "I am excited for her to receive this recognition for all of her hard work."
Snead, a recent graduate from Pasadena, Md, earned her bachelor's and master's degree from The College. A three-time team captain, she won the 2023 Charleston Athletics Commitment to Excellence Award while also earning the highest cumulative senior GPA. Snead graduated summa cum laude with top honors while holding a 4.00 GPA and serving as a Hidden Opponent Campus Leader.
"This is such an incredible honor for Jenna and for our program. I've been fortunate to coach so many amazing student athletes through the years here in Charleston and Jenna is absolutely one of our all-time best," said head women's soccer coach Christian Michner. "She knocks it out of the park in all four pillars of this prestigious leadership award and I couldn't be more excited for her. Jenna's impact on our program has been immense and she leaves CofC women's soccer in a better place."
Brotzman, who also earned two degrees from The College, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in both her studies and athletics. An Elite 15 winner, Brotzman led the SAAC initiative for canned food drive to donate to College of Charleston Cougar Pantry after volunteering solo at the food pantry for several semesters. The Austin, Texas native brought the two groups together to create an annual canned food drive to encourage student athlete involvement in the bettering of the community. She also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and Center for Civic Engagement.
"Not many student-athletes are able to overcome major injuries, surgeries and health scares over a period of five years, but Peyton Brotzman did while earning a bachelor's degree and MBA. I continually marvel at her dedication, competitiveness and drive to overcome all these obstacles. These things would have stopped many from trying to compete – maybe even ending their tennis careers," said head women's tennis coach Angelo Anastopoulo. "But Peyton's perseverance was amazing, and she did come back; and she was successful, too. I've never had an individual on my team who has loved competing as much as she did. She not only lifted her teammates' spirits, she lifted mine as well and taught all of us to never give up."
