Holland Earns 500th Block in Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Middle blocker Allie Holland tallied her 500th career block as the College of Charleston won in straight sets (25-15, 25-19 and 25-8) against Campbell Saturday afternoon.
 
The Cougars have won eight straight matches, improving to 11-4 and begin conference play 4-0 for the first time since 2018. With the loss, the Camels are now 2-12 and 0-4 in league play.
 
Holland tied her season high with seven total blocks in the winning efforts while also tallying seven kills. As a team, Charleston hit .402, besting Friday's previous season-high of .363.
 
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED:
  • Holland and fellow fifth year Emily Dykes posted back-to-back blocks in the second set, making it a 21-12 score. The Cougars controlled the lead throughout, later holding a 21-5 advantage in the third set.
 
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST CAMPBELL:
  • Charleston had just five attacking errors in both matches this weekend.
  • Holland and Anna Smith both had seven kills while Emily Banitt and Caitlyn Callahan led the offense with eight kills each.
  • Tynley Smeltzer paced the defense, recording a game-best 14 digs.
  • Holland was part of seven of the team's eight blocks Saturday.
  • The Cougars hit .632 in the third set, the highest hitting percentage in a frame this year.
  • CofC also did not record an attacking error in the final set of the match, putting down 12 kills on 19 total attacks.
  • Charleston kept Campbell to a .080 attacking percentage.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston is 16-4 against Campbell all-time and 10-3 in three set matches.
  • CofC's eight-match winning streak is the longest since the Cougars won 15 consecutive contests in 2017.
  • The Cougars begin conference play 4-0 for the first time since 2018.
  • Charleston closed out the month of September with a 10-3 record.
  • Holland became the sixth active Division I player to have 500 career blocks.
  • Smeltzer has 14-plus digs in 11 matches this season.
  • Charleston recorded 23 service aces over the two matches.
 
UP NEXT:
Charleston welcomes North Florida to TD Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 1 for the final home non-conference match of the season. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start and will be 'Student Appreciation Night.' All home matches are non-ticketed and free of charge.
