Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars Earn a Point with Draw Against Elon on Senior Day

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (4-8-3, 1-3-2) earned a point with a 0-0 draw against Elon (6-2-6, 3-0-3) in a Coastal Athletic Association matchup at Patriots Point Saturday afternoon.

In a chippy contest against the top team in the South Division, the Cougars hung tough with the Phoenix throughout the entire game.

In the full 90, Elon outshot Charleston 10-8, but the Cougars went toe-to-toe with the Phoenix to earn a point and remain in a position to play for the postseason with two games remaining.

RECAP — Jourdan Schumacher set the tone for the game as he made two saves within the first 10 minutes of the match.

After stopping Elon's initial push, Charleston gained its footing and saw the game's first good opportunity in the 30th minute as Matt Lenert sent a cross inside the box, and Stian Bendvold narrowly missed a header wide of the net.

Both teams continued to battle for possession for the final 15 minutes of the half, each picking up multiple fouls as the game went into the break 0-0.

Coming out of the locker room, neither team recorded a shot for the first 15 minutes. Elon got off the first shot of the half in the 62nd minute, but Charleston's pesky defense was able to block the attempt.

Earning a corner two minutes later, the Cougars gained momentum. Just a couple minutes after the corner, Charleston had the game's best opportunity as Noah Gold sent an outlet pass to Lenert, who led Bendvold towards the Phoenix goal in the 68th minute. Bendvold then ripped a shot at the bottom of the net, but the Phoenix keeper made his third save of the game and kept the contest scoreless.

For the last 20 minutes, both defenses blocked multiple shots as Charleston and Elon tied 0-0 at Patriots Point Saturday afternoon.

CAA TOURNAMENT — The top two teams from each division and the next two best overall teams in the conference will earn a spot in the CAA Tournament and the right to play for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Although Charleston is fourth in the South Division, the Cougars currently sit just two points behind both of the at-large bids to the CAA Tournament, and there is still a lot to play for in the team's final two games. The full standings can be found here.

UP NEXT — Charleston hits the road for another CAA contest against William & Mary Saturday, October 25th. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., the game will be broadcast on FloCollege and a link to the stream as well as live stats can be found on the men's soccer schedule page on cofcsports.com.
