Charleston Visits William & Mary Saturday Afternoon

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Charleston men's soccer team hits the road for the final time in the regular season for a Coastal Athletic Association match against William & Mary Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m.

With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Cougars will need at least a tie against the Tribe to keep their postseason hopes alive. William & Mary is also playing for the postseason, and the Tribe enter Saturday's contest needing a win to stay in the postseason race.

LAST TIME OUT Charleston enters the match 4-8-3 (1-3-2) following a 0-0 home draw against Elon at Patriots Point Saturday, October 18.

In a chippy contest against the top team in the South Division, the Cougars hung tough with the Phoenix throughout the entire game. Jourdan Schumacher made two saves in the first 10 minutes, while Stian Bendvold narrowly missed a header as both teams went into halftime deadlocked 0-0.

In the full 90, Elon outshot Charleston 10-8, but the Cougars went toe-to-toe with the Phoenix to earn a point and remain in a position to play for the postseason with two games remaining.

SCOUTING THE TRIBE — The Tribe come into the contest with an overall record of 2-8-4 and a 1-4-1 mark in conference play. William & Mary is 2-3-3 at home and is coming off a 0-0 tie against George Mason Tuesday night.

William & Mary is led by senior forward Sam Delgado who's started in all 14 games this season. He leads the Tribe with six points - two goals and two assists.

MATCHUP HISTORY — The Cougars hold a 4-13-3 all-time record against the Tribe. However, Charleston has won the last two matches between the squads, including a 3-1 victory at Patriots Point earlier this year.

In the matchup in September, Pavel Dashin scored the game's opening goal before William & Mary tied the contest. Ben Bagshaw then scored a pair of goals in a span of just over 10 minutes in the first and second halves to lift College of Charleston to a 3-1 win.

AWARDS — The Cougars have earned two CAA Player of the Week awards so far this season.

Jourdan Schumacher garnered the Defensive Player of the Week honor on September 15 after posting two clean sheets with eight saves as he helped the Cougars defeat USC Upstate 1-0 and earn a point against Campbell in a 0-0 draw earlier that week.

Ben Bagshaw was named the Offensive Player of the Week on September 29 after scoring a pair of goals in just over 10 minutes propelling Charleston to a 3-1 win over William & Mary on September 27.

CAA STANDINGS — The top three teams from each division in the conference will earn a spot in the CAA Tournament and the right to play for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Charleston is currently in fourth place in the South Division and four points behind UNCW for the third and final spot in the postseason. The Cougars will need at least a tie Saturday afternoon to keep their postseason hopes alive.
