GREENVILLE, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team upset No. 15 Furman on Tuesday night on the road, handing the Paladins their first loss of the season.
This marks the Cougars' second top 15 win of the season, previously defeating then No. 15 North Carolina at home on September 1.
Charleston controlled the opening minutes of play, taking three corner kicks in the first three minutes of action and keeping the ball on the attacking third for the majority of the opening frame.
Charlie Crockford provided Charleston's best attempt with a shot on goal to the bottom right corner of the net.
With under two minutes remaining in the first half, Noah Gold connected on a free kick straight to same spot of Crockford's earlier strike to give Charleston a 1-0 edge entering the locker room.
Jourdan Schumacher anchored the Charleston defense in the second half, recording three saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
Furman took 14 shots compared to Charleston's five. Despite the early flurry of corner kicks, Furman won the battle on the evening with eight to the Cougars' four.
Gold, Crockford, Ben Bagshaw, Issaka Salifu, and Matt Lenert combined for Charleston's shots. With the goal, Gold has three points on the year including his first goal of the season.
The Cougars, now 3-4-1, return to action on Saturday, September 20 at UNCW. Action is set for 7:00 p.m.
