Cougars Defeat Thunderbirds in Thrilling Home Opener

Charleston, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team secured a thrilling 3-1 victory in their season opener against Southern Utah on Wednesday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars started strong in the attacking third, drawing a free kick down field within the first few minutes, but fell behind when the Thunderbirds took the lead with a goal in the 12th minute.
The Cougars responded shortly after with a solo goal in the 31st minute by freshman Kassy Uzelman, the first of her career.
Bella Antonio gave Charleston the lead four minutes later with a header on the cross by Mary Martin Spinner to put the Cougars up 2-0 heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Antonio came up with her second goal of the match on a penalty kick, marking the third career brace for the senior forward.
Ainsley Chunn ended the contest with two saves, including an impressive stop in the final minutes to help seal the Charleston victory.
Charleston returns to action at home this Sunday, August 16 at 7:00pm vs. USC Upstate. The match at Patriots Point will also feature a College of Charleston prize pack raffle at half time.
