Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell 2-0 to William & Mary on the road in Williamsburg Saturday afternoon. The loss was the Cougars' first of the season.

After a lengthy weather delay, the Charleston offense came out of the locker room with five shots in the first 13 minutes of action.

Marten Brink made his first and only save of the first half in the 15^th minute of play on a shot toward the top of net. Neither team could find the back of the goal in the first 45 minutes, entering the half tied 0-0. The Cougars and Tribe took a matching seven shots in the opening half.

The Tribe broke the stalemate with a goal three minutes into the second half. The hosts added their second goal of the day on a successful penalty kick attempt in the 62nd minute.

Matt Lenert and Stian Bendvold attempted to put the Cougars on the board late with back-to-back shots on goal in final ten minutes of action but could not connect.

The teams took a matching 14 shots each. William & Mary had eight corner kick attempted compared to five for Charleston.

Lenert led the Cougars with four shots followed by Bendvold, Ryan Watson, Henrik Boer, and Michiharu Takanashi with two each. Brink finished with two saves.

Charleston, now 2-1-1, returns home for a non-conference contest against Winthrop at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 8. The match will be broadcast on FloCollege.
