CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston men's soccer team returns to Patriots Point to host Winthrop in non-conference action on Tuesday, September 8. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.

QUICK KICKS — Charleston has started the 2026 season 2-1-1 and 1-1 in CAA play. The Cougars suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday at William & Mary, 2-0.
Charleston is led by Keith Wiggans who is entering his seventh season at the helm of the Cougars. Wiggans' assistant coaches are Jet Terry (2nd season), Ernesto Aguinaga-Hernandez (2nd season) and Jake Douvas (1st season). Anissa Williams also enters her first season with the Cougars as the team's Head of Data Analytics.
LORD LENERT— Matt Lenert has had an incredible start to the 2026 season. After earning spots on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and the Preseason CAA Team, Lenert wasted no time making his mark in his senior season.
The Falls Church, Virginia native had a standout performance against FGCU (8/23). Lenert scored twice against the Eagles, including the game-winner in the 86th minute, and tabbed an assist. The brace was the second of Lenert's career, while his game-winner was the fourth of his career. Through the first three matches, Lenert leads the Cougars with eight points and is shooting an impressive .429 on the young season. Additionally, Lenert has scored or assisted on all but one of the Cougars' six goals so far this year.
For his efforts during the opening week, Lenert was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week and earned the CAA Offensive Player of the Week award.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES — Charleston has earned the first two CAA Offensive Player of the Week awards this year. Most recently, junior midfielder/forward Stian Bendvold earned the honor after recording a match-high three points, scoring one goal and assisting on another to help Charleston start CAA play 1-0.
Additionally, senior forward Matt Lenert was named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week (8/24) after an impressive opening week to the 2026 season. During the first week of the year, Lenert scored or assisted on all four Cougar goals, totaling three goals, one assist and a game-winner against FGCU to help the Cougars start the season 1-0-1.
SCOUTING WINTHROP — Winthrop enters Tuesday's contest 3-1 and is coming off a 3-0 victory over VMI on September 5. The Eagles roster features 22 new players and consists of nine freshmen, five sophomores, nine juniors and five seniors. Tuesday will mark the Eagles third straight road contest.
MATCHUP HISTORY — Charleston is 23-9-1 all-time against Winthrop. The contest will mark the seventh meeting between the programs in the last eight seasons. The teams played to a 1-1 draw a season ago in Rock Hill.
THE WIGGANS FILE — Keith Wiggans enters his seventh season as head coach at his alma mater in 2026 after being promoted from associate head coach in December 2019.
Wiggans spent 11 seasons serving under his college coach and the program's all-time winningest coach, Ralph Lundy, who retired in following the 2019 season. Wiggans was an assistant coach for nine years and associate head coach for two seasons before taking over the program. He was part of the staff which won the Southern Conference title and made its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

LAST TIME OUT —The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell 2-0 to William & Mary on the road in Williamsburg Saturday afternoon. The loss was the Cougars' first of the season. After a lengthy weather delay, the Charleston offense came out of the locker room with five shots in the first 13 minutes of action.
The Tribe broke the stalemate with a goal three minutes into the second half. The hosts added their second goal of the day on a successful penalty kick attempt in the 62nd minute. Matt Lenert and Stian Bendvold attempted to put the Cougars on the board late with back-to-back shots on goal in final ten minutes of action but could not connect.
UP NEXT — Charleston will continue non-conference play at USC Upstate on Saturday, September 12. Action is set for 1:00 p.m. in Spartanburg.
