George E. Keeler, Honorary (Faculty)
When retired Brigadier General George Keeler joined the faculty in the math department in 1960, he brought with him a wealth of experience as a teacher, leader and diplomat. A graduate of West Point and Duke University, he had taught at the Military Academy and the Industrial War College and served in the European theater in World War II. The Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Croix de Guerre decorated his exploits as an anti-aircraft officer and a member of the delegation which accepted the German surrender. As a chairman of the faculty committee on athletics, he had to fight diplomatically to get funds for the teams from a president who did not believe in college sports. He would personally donate funds toward equipment and transportation. Keeler was equally generous with his time. An avid golfer, he had been a member of the golf team at West Point and offered to coach the struggling group of players at the College and let them use his membership at the country club. Having no scholarships to offer them, he inspired the team through his leadership and care.
