Wendell M. Levi, Class of '12 (Basketball)
The 1911-12 men's basketball squad was paced by the College's most prolific athlete in team captain Wendell Levi. Also a baseball and track captain, he played center on a team that won its last four games and became local and state roundball champions, the later accomplishment via a 41-28 defeat of Newberry. Levi graduated from the College of Charleston in 1912 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1915. He then became First Lieutenant in charge of the Pigeon Section of the United States Army Signal Corps for the South Eastern Department during World War I. Upon returning to the city of Sumter, S.C., Levi helped to establish the Palmetto Pigeon Plant, which is said to be the world's largest squab farm. For nearly 50 years, Wendell Levi was editor of the "Questions and Answers" department of the American Pigeon Journal. The College of Charleston not only received the invaluable collection of books and pamphlets from Levi, he also presented the College his personal papers and manuscripts of all of his writings. Mrs. Wendell Levi gave a generous gift to CofC that made the Wendell Mitchell Levi Library and Archives possible.
