L. Thomas Holst, Class of '65 (Basketball & Tennis)
Dr. L. Thomas Holst was a four-year starter on the CofC men's basketball team and was co-captain for one year and captain for two seasons. The Maroons improved each year and won the inaugural Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in 1964 where he was the state's leading scorer averaging 16 points per game. By 1965, "Tom-Tom" led the conference in scoring with an average of 21 points per game. He was named All-Conference, All-Tournament and All-State and was among the top 10 scorers in the state of South Carolina in 1964 and 1965. He finished his career with a total of 1,433 points and a career average of 15.9 points per game. Holst was also an outstanding member of the men's tennis team and compiled a career record of 28-2 at No. 5 singles and an 18-1 record with teammate Billy Silcox at No. 1 doubles. The Maroons would win 30 consecutive team matches. Holst graduated from with CofC with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1965 and later earned his doctorate degree in physical organic chemistry from Clemson in 1971.
