J. Stewart Walker, Jr. (Posthumous), Class of '78 (Sailing)
Stewart Walker was the first College of Charleston athlete to be named an All-American in 1978. In his 1975-76 season, Walker and the sailing team placed either first or second at every regatta. He was awarded the Philip O'Neill Hanvey Memorial Trophy from the Carolina Yacht Club and the George M. Lockwood Memorial Trophy from the Charleston Yacht Club, the two highest honors for local sailors. Following his graduation, he pursued a career in banking, but continued to be involved in every aspect of local sailing. Walker passed away in 1983 in a sailing accident, and soon thereafter, the Walker Foundation became the primary repository for funding one of the nation's premier sailing programs. The J. Stewart Walker Trophy is given in recognition of outstanding student-athlete leadership each year at the College.
