RICHMOND, Va. --- College of Charleston junior
Jenny Martin and freshman
Tess Masselink each garnered All-Colonial Athletic Association honors after finishing amongst the top three in their respective events at the 2018 CAA Track and Field Championships last month, announced CAA officials Wednesday with the reveal of the league's postseason awards.
Martin wrote her name into the record books at the CAA Championships with a second-place performance in the heptathlon, scoring 4591 points to surpass her own mark – set last season – by 38 points. The Lansdale, Fla. native made a late charge in her signature event, the javelin throw, with a mark of 40.34 meters to beat out the rest of the field by more than eight meters. The toss launched Martin into second place, where she remained for the rest of the competition to claim a silver medal in the event. Martin has now earned All-CAA honors in the heptathlon in back-to-back seasons after winning bronze at the 2017 CAA Championships.
Masselink put her grit and resolve on full display in a phenomenal final day at the CAA Championships. The freshman opened the day with a bronze medal performance in her first collegiate steeplechase, finishing in 10:50.17 to make her the fourth fastest in the event in school history. Masselink was back on the track barely three hours later scoring more points for the Cougars in the 5000m run. In that event, the Cornwall, England native finished seventh with a time of 17:46.38 to put her sixth on the school's all-time list in that event.
Patrice Williams of Northeastern was named the CAA's Women's Track Athlete of the Year, while William and Mary's Leia Mistowski garnered CAA Women's Field Athlete of the Year honors. Northeastern's Khailah Griffin was selected as CAA Women's Rookie of the Year; Tramaine Shaw of Northeastern was voted CAA Women's Coach of the Year.
