The College of Charleston drops to 1-1, while Vanderbilt improves to 2-0 and wins the tournament.
After a scoreless first half, where the Cougars out-shot the Commodores 8-5, Vanderbilt was able to connect when it mattered, as John Krause got the ball past the goalkeeper at the 57:46 mark for the eventual game-winner. Brady Hyde picked up the assist on the play. For his effort Krause was named tournament MVP.
The Cougars edged the Commodores, 13-11, in shots and tied in saves, 3-3. Krause led Vanderbilt with six shots, while Matt Morris and Jeremy Gold each had four shots to pace the Cougars.
Charleston travels to South Carolina Sept. 6th for a 7:00 PM match, while Vanderbilt travels to Berkeley, Calif. To take on California in a 2:30 PM match Sept. 9th.
Western Michigan Defeats Georgia State, 3-0
A penalty kick by Dustin Snyder in the opening half proved to be the game-winner as Western Michigan defeated Georgia State, 3-0, in the opening game of the day.
The Broncos improved to 1-1, while the Panthers dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Western Michigan's Edgar Rivera was fouled inside the box at the 19:31 mark to set up the penalty kick. Rivera was injured on the play and taken off the field, which allowed Snyder to take the shot. Snyder sailed his kick to the top right of the net as the goalkeeper was caught covering the left.
The Broncos added two insurance goals, with the first one at 72:39 as Tom Oatley broke away from the pack and chipped the ball just over the goalkeeper's reach. Nashir Carabell picked up an assist on the play. The third goal of the game came at 75:53 when Carabell took one in off the Mark Kroeger assist..
Western Michigan led 10-8 in shots, but it was the Georgia State with the 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Each goalkeeper had three saves each. Jaber led the Broncos with three shots, while Armin Marquez paced the Panthers with three shots.
The Broncos travel to St. Bonaventure for a 2:30 PM match Sept. 10th, while the Panthers travel to Birmingham, Ala. To take on Birmingham Southern in an 8:00 PM game Sept. 9th.
