The College of Charleston men's soccer team improved their SoCon record to 3-0 with a victory over Georgia Southern, 2-1, in front of 205 spectators at Patriots Point, on Thursday night.
The first half was scoreless, with CofC (8-5-1, 3-0-0 SoCon) attempting seven shots and two corner kicks, while Georgia Southern (5-3-3, 1-1-2 SoCon) took five shots and three corner kicks.
The second half scoring began in the 46th minute, as Eze Chamorro scored an unassisted goal for Georgia Southern, making the score, 1-0.
Senior Jeremy Gold netted a free kick in the 48th minute to gain his SoCon-leading 10th goal of the season to tie the score for the Cougars, 1-1.
Freshman Zach Prince scored the game-winning goal for CofC in the 57th minute, off of a Gold assist, to secure the victory for the Cougars.
Gold now has 25 assists in his career, which is a new CofC record. The previous leader, Scott Clayton, played for the Cougars from 1992-95.
"We put forth a better effort tonight then we did on Tuesday's night game against Coastal (Carolina)," said associate head coach Ralph Polson. "From our warm-ups to the final whistle, we played with a stronger focus, because we knew that Georgia Southern would be a tough opponent for us."
Junior Corbin Waller had four saves in the match for his eighth victory of the season.
The Cougars have never lost to Georgia Southern in ten matches as a Division 1 school.
CofC has started a SoCon season undefeated after three matches only once in the school's history. The Cougars started the 2004 season 5-0 in SoCon play and eventually won the SoCon Tournament.
The Cougars return to action on Oct. 11 for their final home game of the season against UNC Greensboro (8-4-1, 3-0-1 SoCon) at 6 p.m.
The five seniors on the CofC roster, Jabari Seabrook, Darren Toby, Jeremy Gold, Scott Milroth and Howard Ash, will be honored prior to the start of the match.
